Deploying existing vendor "Image"

We use some custom computers from a company called Disguise that we are trying to get setup with SDA for easier imaging.

They supply an ISO that is booted from an external USB, from what I can tell this contains a boot.wim that boots the machine and then copies/expands a main .wim file to the machine. The system then reboots and goes through an initial "setup" process where various things are setup (network adapters renamed, custom software installed e.t.c)

Images are located here

Is there any way for us to take this inner .wim file and using it via KACE? I have found al older article here that seems to talk about doing what I am asking about, but it's very old, and the linked tool indicates it's being "discontinued"?

Kace does have an "Import" function now, but this doesn't work in my initial jabbing at things.

We can go down the road of imaging, but it's a pain as sometimes the newer images contain firmware updates for the hardware that won't get installed on all the machines if we just take an image from a master and deploy it to the others. It's also a multi disk, multi partition legacy/bios system which makes things even more complex.

Any pointers would be appreciated.

Thanks!

  • Sounds like a red flag that the vendor sent legacy/BIOS images. Can you request EFI ones? I have encountered sloppy vendors like that, and I suspect that once the image is deployed you will find other old/outdated things like drivers/apps/VMWare tools that will need to be updated as well. Might want to start a list of unsatisfactory things starting with the BIOS formatted image, just in case the list is needed later.

As for the imaging, can you deploy to a VP, capture, sysprep, then redeploy that and add the firmware updates through a script or other process? Sounds like a lot of work for a vended app/system! The vendor should be doing more of the work since you are paying them IMHO. - JS_DC 1 year ago
