Is it formatted in a format that Windows can read? Is it even formatted?

  • Hi, yes, it is formatted as FAT32. Whenever I plug the external Hard Disk to a windows PC, it is sometimes being detected but as Letter only, the drive it self can't be opened. - John Carlo Rodriguez 7 years ago
  • It is working previously, but all of a sudden, the drive has gone defective. All my files are there. :( - John Carlo Rodriguez 7 years ago

Use Linux. If a modern, full-featured Linux OS (like Ubuntu) can't read it then something is very wrong. Unless you know it's not formatted. In which case, format it as NTFS to use with Windows or exFAT to use in Windows and Mac.

...and you don't have a back-up, right? Oops...

Make a copy onto another drive (use a disk imaging program) then attempt a recovery using one of the many tools available. If that's unsuccessful, your only other option is to send it to a data recovery company.
