Get/Set Computer Name

I created a Win7 with all updates WIM image.  I downloaded the sysprep creator software, built the unattend.xml file and placed the file in the sysprep and panther folders.  When I sysprepped the image, I used the audit, generalize and shutdown options.

When I deploy my image, I added the GetComputerx64, Create Single Partition, Format/MBR C: in my pre-install tasks.  My mid-level task is Set Computer Namex64.

These tasks work flawlessly with my basic Win7 image and scripted install.  When I deploy my "Win7Update" image and type in the computer name at the prompt, the computer name is not the same as what I typed in.  I get no error message.

Do the Windows updates do something weird to the Get/Set computer name task?

Thanks for your help!

  • What do you get for the name, is it randomized or is it the name of the computer you built the image from? Windows Updates should not interfere with the naming of a computer at all, so it shouldn't be that. - nheyne 9 years ago
  • It's KACEADM-VTU1Q50. The number is not the serial number of the computer. We used to have an OU called KACEADM but not anymore so I'm not sure where this is coming from. - lnovak 9 years ago
    • Are you deploying with KACE?
We use SCCM and get MININT-XXXXXX
Seen like your script is faulty somewhere...

  • It sounds like your set computer name task isn't running properly. The computer name you're getting is the randomly generated name based on the user listed in the unattend file, I'm guessing it's "Kace Administrator" or something similar. Windows takes that name and then adds random letters and numbers after. - chucksteel 9 years ago
  • check the answer file you generated and make sure there is not any line with <ComputerName></ComputerName> in it. If one exists delete it. - SMal.tmcc 9 years ago
  • I am using the K2000 to deploy the image. I created an application pre-install task where the file is GetComputerName_x64.exe and the parameter is GetComputerName_x64.exe /dialog. I downloaded this from the Dell Kace website. - lnovak 9 years ago
    • And what does your set computer name task look like? - chucksteel 9 years ago

  • In the meantime, I'll check my answer file -- thanks, SMal.tmcc! - lnovak 9 years ago
