I am trying to find the best way to categorize software by department
What is the best way to categorize software by department, the goal is to obtain reports that will tell me the pieces of software that each department needs.

I can think of two ways to do this:
If you already have a list of software used in each department, thenĀ in the Assets module, add a custom field for Department to the Software asset type and select the appropriate department for each title.
If you don't know which departments are using which software titles and you want to determine that based on software already installed on computers, then you can use reporting. This will require assigning labels to computers based on their department. We place computers in Active Directory organizational units based on their department and then use LDAP labels in the appliance. For instance, that means I can generate a report of the number of computers with a specific title installed grouped by department. If you have access to a tool like Power BI, then creating those reports will be easier.
I am new to KACE, I actually don't deal with it much.
We do not have computers organized in AD based on groups, we just have the Computers container and that's it, we have AD user groups by Department though.
I see the software list on each system and that's nice but I would like a report that would tell me Accounting uses these pieces of software, Operations uses these others, etc.
So seems to me that I need to assign labels individually to each computer?
Since the logged in user is visible in KACE, can that be used to automate the label assignment?
if not, I can just assign them manually. - pcoronado 5 years ago
