I believe there are some aspects of the oracle install that have issues with long file names. So the "Program Files" directory will give it problems. I'm not exactly sure though.

Probably because it's very unix/java-centric. if you want to automate the installation, look into the response files, which have been documented elsewhere. In v10g they work pretty well IME.
