Custom report to show all tickets within a date range
I need a report to show all tickets for the last quarter or even the entire year

If you have one queue, you should be able to build this query in the wizard. If you have more that one queue, you will need to modify the SQL code. With multiple queues, I would suggest getting the results as close as you can for a single queue, then edit the SQL to remove the queue restriction.
Unless you are a SQL maven, I highly recommend getting your query close with the wizard and then editing to finish it up. The wizard will get the fields and the joins you need so that you only need to edit the conditions in the where clause.
The answer also depends on the definition of "all tickets". You can define that as tickets created in the given date range, tickets modified, tickets with a given status, tickets closed. I would suggest looking at the delivered reports like "Closed Tickets last 7 days by Owner", "Open Tickets last 7 days by Owner", and "Stalled/Open Tickets by Category" to get started.
